Mars Distillery is one of Japan’s most significant and fascinating whisky producers. It is owned by Hombo Shuzo, a family-owned company that has been producing alcoholic beverages since the 19th century. The first Mars whisky distillery opened in Kagoshima in 1985, but production was soon moved to Nagano in the Japanese Alps.
Today, Mars Shinshu Distillery is located at an altitude of more than 800 metres, making it the highest whisky distillery in Japan. The pure alpine water and cool climate create ideal conditions for maturation.
The distillery produces a wide range of whiskies, including single malts, blended malts, and experimental limited releases. Mars also operates Tsunuki Distillery in Kagoshima, where the warmer climate gives the whiskies a different character. This two-distillery model allows Mars to create a broad range of distinctive and unique flavour profiles.
The brand is known for balance, subtle sweetness, and fresh fruit character. Mars has gained strong international recognition and is an excellent example of the diversity and quality of Japanese whisky.
